NATIONAL AGM 2026

NEW LEADERSHIP FOR THE TRAINERS’ ASSOCIATION
Our National AGM was held in Auckland on 7 September, with Robert Wellwood elected as the new National President of the NZ Trainers’ Association.
Robert takes over from Shaun Clotworthy, who has stood down after five years as National President.
We would like to sincerely thank Shaun for his commitment and leadership during his five years as President. He has given generously of his time to represent trainers and has played an important role in the Association’s engagement with industry stakeholders. We greatly appreciate his contribution.
With Robert moving into the National President’s role, Andrew Forsman, who has been Vice President of the Northern Branch, will now take over as Northern Branch President.
A valuable opportunity for open discussion
Following the completion of the formal AGM business and constitutional requirements, the meeting was formally closed. The National Executive then took the opportunity to hold an open discussion with senior representatives from across the racing industry.
We were pleased to welcome Jason Fleming (TAB NZ and Establishment Board), Paul Humphries (NZTR Chair and Establishment Board), Dr Eliot Forbes (Racing Integrity Board – attending online), Matt Ballesty (NZTR CEO), Mitch Lamb (NZTR General Manager Racing) and Matthew Williamson (NZTR Head of Licensing).
Having such senior industry representatives available for direct discussion with the National Executive was a valuable opportunity. It enabled the Executive to raise issues of importance to trainers directly with those responsible for key areas of the industry, ask questions and seek clarity on matters affecting trainers and the future of racing.
This direct engagement is an important part of the Association's role in representing trainers and ensuring their views are heard at the highest levels of the industry.
The discussions were frank and constructive, and the National Executive appreciated the willingness of those attending to engage openly on the issues raised.
Robert is looking forward to taking on the National President’s role and working with the National Executive and industry stakeholders to ensure trainers continue to have a strong voice in the future direction of New Zealand racing.

LIFE MEMBERSHIP FOR PAUL NELSON

Congratulations to Paul Nelson, whose nomination for Life Membership was put forward by the Central Districts Branch and ratified at the National AGM.

The honour recognises Paul’s outstanding achievements and contribution to the racing industry, particularly jumps racing, over many years.
